I just wasted 10 minutes of my day reading through yet another episode of As the Guru Turns. In the 22 years Ive been writing about fitness and nutrition, all I know for certain is that lots of different approaches can give you a desired result. Low-fat, low-carb, Zone, Mediterranean -- they all work for two simple reasons: 1. They give you a mechanism to create a calorie deficit. 2. The more you believe in them, the better they seem to work. Same with training. As long as a program gives you a progressive mechanism to create mechanical tension and a deep level of muscular fatigue, its probably going to give you what you want. But in my experience it helps if you believe its the best program you could possibly do. Its always seemed to me that the more you believe in a diet or workout, the more willing youll be to push yourself into that zone of discomfort where you tolerate some hunger, and some soreness, and where youre able to pass up an occasional indulgence, and squeeze in a workout on a day youd rather not. Every now and then Ill see a new fad diet or workout that goes against everything the research tells us, and Ill yell and stomp my cyber-feet and watch the inventor make a lot more money than I ever will. But Ill concede that even some of those programs probably work for some of the people who believe in them enough to make them work. The only regrets I have are the times Ive bought into one extreme or another, or taken it personally when someone doesnt buy what Im selling. Even the strongest convictions are best presented in a cloak of modesty.
