I just watched the TV3 News story about the Brougham Park hen - TopicsExpress

I just watched the TV3 News story about the Brougham Park hen rescue. Maybe I am going soft in the head, but I feel really sad now. The only positive I can see is that it was good to have the story in the mainstream. It raises awareness that battery farming still exists. Kind of. It didnt really tell us much. I was a bit pissed off they didnt even acknowledge us, but instead just HUHA. I mean HUHAs awesome effort really does deserve some credit. It really does. We are EXTREMELY grateful for their epic rescue mission. Saving those last remaining hens just made our day. hell, it made our whole year! :) But Tayla, Jordan, & Jenny, and the rest of us deserve some credit too. They had Taylas no. They even spoke to her. But they decided not to interview her. Why? I can only presume because our nice wee story wasnt sensational or quirky enough. Its always the same with things like this. No-one notices the bucket filling up, until it overflows, and then suddenly everyone starts talking about the last few drops that went in, and who added them, and what they looked like, and so on. They forget all about the people who steadily added all the drops before those last few. I wasnt happy with the focus of the story either. I kind of wish they hadnt shown the footage of inside the sheds. Thats why I feel sad now. :( The farmer, Chris Wilson, saw the TV3 item. Can you imagine how upset she was? Well, she was. I know she was. She got on the phone and started going off at poor Tayla. I dont hate Chris. I feel sorry for her. And its all over now, so whats to be gained from making her feel bad? Shes almost as much a victim of a severely sick and dysfunctional world as the hens were. Sure they suffered much worse than she ever did. But she still suffered. I cant hate her. I have no right to. Until I knew better, I used to buy battery eggs. When I was a kid, I even worked on a battery farm. I trapped possums as a kid too, and hunted and fished a little over the years, and was a freezing worker. I ate meat most of my life, like most of you reading this. None of us has any right to hate her. Surely. It is so important to, Love the sinner and hate the sin. To separate out the person, from the action. To acknowledge that even bad people have their good qualities and can be redeemed. I kind of liked the fact that as time went by, Chris was warming to the animal people and the greenies. Because she was. I liked the whole feel-good aspect of the story. I didnt want to hurt Chris. I dont believe that punishing her will make the world a better place. As MLK Jr. said, Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. He also said, I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear. Or as Gandhi said, An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind Jesus said, Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, and Love your enemies: pray for those who persecute you. Somewhere in the Bible its says we should, Judge not lest ye be judged, and Remove the log from your own eye before you try to remove the splinter from your brothers eye etc. etc. etc. I am tired of all the hate and ugliness in the world. Just tired of it. Sick and tired of it. I dont want to make the world uglier, colder, or harder. I want to make it more beautiful, warmer, kinder. Revenge is a fundamentally flawed concept. It doesnt help anyone. Our mission felt like a nice ending to a long, bad story. ...And so ALL of the lovely chickens were saved after all. The farm closed down for good, and the hens all lived happily ever after. Even the farmer had come to see that the nice people who saved the hens might have been not so bad as she had thought they were after all. It made her think about her life, and she started to feel different. The end. And then along comes TV3. Sigh. I guess they thought they were doing the right thing. It did expose factory farming, and thats what I do, right? Youd think Id be happy. Poor Chris. Poor Tayla. I hope Chris comes to see it wasnt us that did that. It was TV3, and we had no say. :( I dont want to read a single comment on this thread, about how she deserved some sort of punishment. I dont want to read about how anyone hates her or what they think of her. If you do, they will be deleted. I am just much too tired of all the ugliness in the world, to bear any more of it tonight. :(
