I just witnessed a horrible incident at the grocery store. An older man had collapsed on the floor near the bathrooms. They called paramedics. The man was conscious and had his hand on his forehead and said he had a panic attack and he could feel his blood pressure was too high. A store employee stood there, indifferent, while he kept shoppers and others from approaching the man telling us that help was coming. That is the least of the horrible incident. I went into the ladies room and a woman with three small children came in. The children were expressing concern for the man and asking their mother questions about him. She completely infuriated me by telling her children not to bother about the man because he was probably just doing it for the attention. She was completely judging him based on his appearance. She took a beautiful teachable moment where she could have embraced the childrens natural compassion. She could have prayed for the man. Nope. She was judgmental, rude and thoughtless and taught her children to be the same. She stood there in her designer boots with her $350 hand bag, primped up to the nines, completely separated from the hardships of her fellow man. I prayed for the man and my final thoughts on this situation are this: Even IF the man were doing that for attention, to be someone who would lay on the floor of a store for 30 minutes to wait for an ambulance is someone who is lonely and hurting and needing compassion. The illness is not always what is apparent. Souls hurt in so many ways. When someone cries out for love, try not to judge their worthiness or the method they use to inquire.
