I keep reading about potential changes and solutions to the achievement gap that exists in our schools. There are calls for things like more diversity training, accountability from the administrations in schools where achievement is lowest, better training for future teachers, etc. While I agree that we have some serious issues to tackle in the classroom, my bigger concern is how parents respond to those needs. Spending as much time as I do in my daughters school, I feel the need to say that teachers cannot and should not be held solely responsible for our childrens lack of performance in the classroom. It appears as though parents have relinquished their authority and responsibility when it comes to education; what happened to our expectations of OUR children? Until we establish a true partnership with schools this battle of blame will continue. No more excuses. I could go on forever about this, but will stop here.
