I know I didnt work in the non-profit field for very long, but I can tell you that the vast majority of the people working there get paid peanuts for all of the work they really do. It really is a labor of love. Budgets are scrutinized and hemmed and hawed over for ages, and many checks and balances are in place to try to keep funds from being misappropriated. If you choose to donate money to ALS, you can specify where your money will be used. You have that power. You can even state if you want your money to be used for research using embryonic stem cells or not. Some may be skeptical and believe the money wont be separated like they say it will, but very special care is taken to ensure it is. The money most charities receive are precious, honored funds.
