I know Im a little early, but September is chiari awareness month. If you dont know what chiari is I dont blame you. Chances are unless you or someone you know has chiari you have never heard of it. It is even hard to find doctors that know what it is. Until last year I had no clue. I remember when my (at the time) four year old daughter got this diagnosis; my world turned upside down. In short, chiari is when your brain is too big to fit in your skull so it squishes down into your spinal canal causing all sorts of problems. Chiari does not discriminate. In fact, you could be walking around right now with it and not know yet. Some people suffer for years before they/ their Dr. discovers chiari. There is not currently a cure for chiari. Surgery is a form of treatment used to help people with chiari improve their quality of life. I know some truly amazing people who are living with this & in constant pain. The point of this post is to raise awareness. Be it donating to a chiari research fund, someone seeing this and finding out it is what they have been suffering from, or one less parent being blind sighted.
