I know Im sharing stuff like this a lot, but how else to counter the relentless, 24-hour lie cycle spilling from Russia these days? A lot of my fellow Danes are affected by the bullshitters phenomenon which dictates that most people feel the need to comment on stuff they really dont know anything about. As a result, a lot of comment threads on Danish newspaper articles about Ukraine are filled with comments from people who believe they know whats going on out here. Its really quite simple: Spurred on by propaganda (= abject lies) from Russia, Russians and others are flocking to East Ukraine to fight an imaginary enemy - the alleged fascist government in Kiev. To support the propaganda, fabricated news articles about the behaviour of the Ukrainian government are flooding the internet. Without these constant lies, East Ukraine would be stabilized. Maybe the current conflict would not even have started. People are killing and dying for a lie. And its exactly what Putin wants - he cannot annex Ukraine, he cannot occupy Ukraine. But he can destabilize Ukraine so much that the government cannot act, and Putin can exert his control, like he wants. That only requires a few thousand well-armed brutal thugs - and these lies make sure a constant supply of these plus idealists believing they are fighting the good fight keeps flowing to Ukraine. Do what you can to counter these lies. Double and triple-check the stories and pictures you see. Or stop commenting altogether. And to the unfortunate few who keep repeating the alleged fact that Western arrogance and NATO expansion is somehow making Putins actions understandable if not legitimate - NATO and the EU does not grow by absorbing new countries. They grow by allowing new countries in, who express a wish to do so. And right now, quite a few want to do so, because they are scared by Russias behavior. NATO and the EU are not to blame here. It is Russia who is isolating itself. If Russia was truly great, nations would seek to join the Russian Federation and the Eurasian Trade Union, not NATO and the EU.
