I know I’m going to get slain in the comments but I feel like I’ve seen way too much misapprehension among White students at Western regarding the subject of race to not give in my two cents. Black people cannot be racist toward whites period. This reverse racism thing that you so comfortably make yourselves believe to exist is distorted and ludicrous to say the least. Oh a Black guy said your lips were small? oh and that you can’t use the N-word? He must be racist toward white people. Not. At this point, you may feel the need to throw a thousand dictionary definitions at me, but today I will tell you what my view of racism is. Racism is about a system of oppression. A system of oppression that inculcates an inferiority complex within members of a race. No Black person thinks that white skin is inherently inferior. No Black person thinks that white hair is subordinate to black hair. No Black person thinks that Black Models are generally more beautiful than their white counterparts. But we have to fight everyday to convince ourselves that neither black skin nor black hair nor black women are lesser and this my friends is the oppression that provides room for racism. Racism is not some meaningless remark made on your appearance or some harmless generalization made about your parents’ wealth. Sure these things may be hurtful to you as a person, but they have not and will never be able to influence the rest of the world’s view of your people as a race. Racism is reminding us of an innately engraved feeling of inferiority that we are still forcing ourselves to see as non-existent. Your constant arguing on here as to the needlessness of the riots in Ferguson or those in New York fails to see the problem for what it truly is. We arent rioting because one man got shot or strangulated to death. We arent rioting because we want Darren Wilson’s head on a stake. We are rioting because one race is constantly getting disproportionately killed by the police and we don’t understand why. So next time you feel like you have been discriminated against, I urge you to think twice before you liken it to racism.
