I know exactly where I was, 17 Years ago tonight. I was on TV in Los Angeles, Anchoring a Nighttime Newscast with the wonderful lady hugging me on the left: Gay Yee, a terrific Co-Anchor of mine at the time. We were almost through with our live newscast when our Producer told us in our ear that we have Breaking News... that Princess Diana has been in a car crash. Even though we were preparing to be finished for the night, this was BIG NEWS, so, I was thinking we would just announce it , and say as much as we knew, and then leave the updated details for the Morning News as we got ready to head home. But then, the Producer came back to us....telling us we have to stay on the air as long as possible because were getting word that Princess Diana is dead. My eyes popped out, and Gay and I just stared at each other. After all, this was one of the most famous and LOVED people on earth. We were stunned, we were sad, and, before WE went on TV, in the Nations second largest market and said Princess Di is dead, I wanted us to be absolutely SURE of our facts. Of course, it WAS true, and Gay and I stayed on the air, reporting the facts as they came flying in at us. It all seemed surreal, and I kept hoping that Id get a message in my ear that she had bounced back and recovered, but that never happened. We were on the air, reporting History...as it was happening. Princess Diana, The woman whose Royal Wedding was seen by untold millions around the world, was now gone. And, like you, I remember exactly where I was 17 years ago tonight.
