I know that I have some family members and friends who consider - TopicsExpress

I know that I have some family members and friends who consider themselves not religious. (I dont consider myself to be religious, either, actually, but a person of faith.... but I digress....) Ive heard them say things like I dont pray and I wish I had your faith. Ive often asked myself HOW can I explain prayer and faith to them in a way that they can begin to understand it. (You dont have to grow up in church to get it) Today I read this article linked to a friends post, and there was my answer. I think this explanation of what prayer really is, at its heart, is something that anyone of any (or no) faith/religious belief can understand. Theres an old quote that says Prayer doesnt change Gods mind, it changes our understanding of Him and I think that is reflected in this article. And I think that from this perspective, if you think you cant pray, then this is a beautiful first step toward doing so. I personally have no problems praying to God, with communicating with what I consider to be the Source of all life. For me, its a conversation with the Almighty - and yes, He answers. Its not always the yes I want to hear. Its sometimes No, and very often Not Yet and I have something better in mind. But in the process of praying, I am relinquishing the idea that I can control things, that I know best, that I deserve some prize or reward in life. I put others first by lifting them up, by speaking their names and asking for what they need. I thank God for the blessings in my life and the provision of my needs that He offers me. And occasionally, I cry, because there are simply no words to express my joy or grief. For me, through prayer, I am recognizing that I am simply a part of the whole of humanity, and live and breathe only because God gives me that breath. And I am grateful that He does.
