I know that a lot of people who knew Smitty are warmed by the very laudatory comments about him. I know that he was honored by Kiwanis in 1976 as La Canadan of the Year but a statue of him someplace on Foothill would be even more appropriate. Ive posted a picture of the 1954 La Canada Athletics and the second half of an article from the Montrose Ledger about Smitty. I have only a clipping my mother saved. I dont know the exact date but I think it would have been in the mid 80s. Ill take a stab at identifying the players on the first year of La Canada Athletics but indulge me; its been 60 years. Front Row (L-R) Ed Kliem (Muir 1959 and still is a co record holder of the B CIF 660 yr relay set in 1959. Im not sure if that race is conducted any longer); Ed Davis (Muir 1960; Im not sure who the third player is; Bill ONeill (Muir 1960); George Pratt (Muir 1960). Dick Kliem (St. Francis 1961??) Ted Anderson.
