I know that some declare that Morse code is not a digital mode. However, the IEEE and most other established authorities do define Morse code as a digital mode. The transport (light, radio waves, sound) might vary, but the encoding of language into the ones and zeros of Morse code includes this code in the digital camp. Way back in the dawn of time, two men developed a way to encode intelligence such that said intelligence could be transmitted to a far off location. We commonly refer to that as Morse code. The original invention of this code involved the encoding of intelligence. According to the BBC science article at g.nw7us.us/17oeUIy , Morse code is a digital signal. Technically, Morse Code has two signal states, on and off so can be considered a binary or digital signal. The difference in the encoding (i.e. the information) is in the time domain so there are five states in the time domain A Dit takes - 1 unit of time A Dah takes - 3 units of time The pause between elements in a letter - 1 unit of time The pause between letters - 3 units of time The pause between words - 7 units of time A unit of time depends on the speed of transmission which can be anything from 5 words per minute (wpm) to 60 words per minute or can be accelerated to 110wpm for certain applications. For speed measurement purposes a word is assumed to be 5 letters. Simply, a digital signal is a signal made up of entities that represent DIGITS. I.e. discrete value options that when appended together will form a much larger value. On the web page g.nw7us.us/1x95F3E -- a web page of the IEEE, we read, Morse is the earliest type of digital communications, as the code is made solely from Ones and Zeros (ons and offs). Morse Code is BY DEFINITION a digital signal, since it uses discrete value options (no matter how modulated or transmitted) that when appended together form the letters, numbers, punctuation, and so on (the larger piece of information; the intelligence). Here is a video that shows you my activation of the K3Y/0 Straight Key Century Club event callsign during one of my numerous scheduled times on as a control operator of the K3Y callsign. The K3Y callsign is active all of January (each year). We are using this callsign to celebrate the SKCC club history and progress. I hope you find us on the air, and make contact with us. Morse code via CW modulation mode is a digital mode that you do not need a computer nor machine to encode/decode. You can use your brain! 73 de NW7US g.nw7us.us/1s4JMGZ
