I know this is long, but I felt I had to get it off my chest. Also I didnt intend to rhyme; it just came out that way. Some of the best political satire are little ditties (just ask Mother Goose) THE MAD RAMBLINGS OF A HAUNTED ONCE EFFECTIVE TEACHER Why am I so haunted? I loved to teach, but now I am taunted; You dont know what is best In practice or in classroom test. Let the ones whove seldom seen A classroom (except in a rainbow dream) Tell you what to do, You should all teach and be evaluated by something new. The old evaluation was a joke, its true But the new one leaves me without a clue. Not because I am being judged, understand But because of the proposed plan grand. It started out alright, I know But now I think we are being snowed. The Tulsa model with its twenty parts Was quite enough and didnt break our hearts. If qualitative measures were not enough And quantitative measures are a must, Then when applying use a little reason; Otherwise the teachers may raise a little treason. Until the students have a stake And responsibility they will take, Do not make a teachers valuation Dependent on the students motivation. So please take into account when you critique That teacher and student are unique. If money is what you want to throw At this problem as it grows. Why not try... this will be farfetched I know But why not try to spend The money on things that might mend Our education predicament. Not line the pockets outside the education environment. Which brings me to my next conundrum; Educational theories are never humdrum. While No Child Left Behind left them all behind The common core is not so kind. A good idea it might be; But how it’s implemented we will see. Analytical writing and thinking is a must; But how theyre presented is not just. In a formula it is taught, And if not followed all is for naught. Politics and special interests stay out! Listen to me, you with clout. The fallacies of these courses must be busted, Or by God there is no justice. If for merit the state does not want to pay, I dont care, that’s not the reason that I stay. Last on Oklahomas priority list, is a teacher’s despair. Careful or the profession will be beyond repair. If you truly want to help, And on our arses be not a whelp. Come back to reality in a hurry, And realize that teachers roles have become blurry. Most of us feel this job is a calling, And hate to leave it just cause the sky may be falling. Although staying in this profession may prove otherwise, Most teachers have a tendency to by wise. Doing what is best for our students is first To help our students thirst For the knowledge that will enhance Their lives and give them a fighting chance. If the powers that be want to show And let our students know That through it all theres actual care On how their futures will fare Then stop this nonsense post haste, And all the blame not on the teachers paste. Try equipping us with the freedom and the tools That make teaching and learning effective in schools. State and Teachers are but a part Another important element is home and hearth. Until we get involvement from all three, Improvement in education you will not see.
