I know this post is going to get a load of stick, and so be it but... We are one of the last towns to actually have a council controlled bus service, as opposed to a private bus company. This is quite possibly the best thing about Warrington, why? Because right now, there are buses travelling around Warrington that run on extreme losses, to ensure isolated individuals can get about in their own home town. Then we have bus routes creating huge turnovers in profit, which plug the funding gap, instead of going into the pockets of shareholders. Do you honestly think a private company would pump all of its profit into failing services for the sake of a few pensioners? Our Council controlled buses ensure all of Warrington is serviced, instead of select routes turning over millions to private investors whilst everyone outside of the centre walks to school/work. The current problem originated when the previous Liberal-Conservative Council, decided to cut colossal amounts of subsidy funding from our bus service. Network Warrington ultimately had to fill that gap with a price increase and fewer journeys. Obviously, bad press went around, and over the last few years as costs rose and thus prices increased, less people have been using (being able to afford) the buses and confidence in Network Warrington decreases. But this becomes a vicious cycle, as when less people use the buses, theres less money coming in and thus costs to run certain routes become higher, which eventually means them closing. Meaning you then have no bus at all... Solution? Get on the bus, and bring a buddy! Every time you step on and pay your fare, you are keeping that bus and every other in Warrington on the road, not to mention keeping the drivers still behind the wheel. Is it perfect? No, I dont doubt you have countless stories of being late or the driver being an arse but seriously, rather that than no bus at all. I would love to see prices come down, and there be more ticket offers to please different demographics of people but that can only happen when people value a service enough to dip into their pocket and be a part of the solution... Prices will come down! Support Network Warrington. Be more of a bus wanker from time to time.
