I know you are all following the efforts of the McDermitt - TopicsExpress

I know you are all following the efforts of the McDermitt Reservation horses as things are posted. We were able to help the last of the Geldings that were in foster in Fallon by a kind and loving sponsor coming forward. Thank you Ansley or your creation of the page to help highlight their need. Right now 5 of the 6 last saved from Fallon in August from the Fort McDermitt Paiute Reservation are still in need of help. The six horses that the kill buyers in Fallon were dangling out in front of everyone and I know 100s of you were aware of the threats to send the paint mare and black mare to slaughter. They posted it in your faces for about a week. I had some of you posts on my page asking me what I was going to do about it. I am not sure why I was the one that many of you were looking to for the rescue of these horses. Yes, I am an advocate for horses in general and do help save horses from slaughter personally and was very involved with saving the McDermitt horses along with many others that were there putting in funds but I am just one person and my money comes from working as a Government employee. To give me more resources I paint and sell the watercolors to help fund the rescue of horses and to help feed those we did rescue in August. As we were in the heat of the rescuing many people were ready to help and many did help. There were many that said they were going to help but for whatever reason never did help. At this time there is an urgent plea to help those horse that I did help rescue along with several other generous donors from the Kill Buyers in Fallon. Those horses have been through hell and were finally fostered at Zuma’s Rescue in Littleton, Colorado. They only had space for them for 60 days and we had plans to get them permanent homes before the weather got bad. We only got a home for one of those horses and now I am trying to help those five horses that all of us wanted to see saved. Right now they are in desperate need of sponsorship. If any of you can help the rescue with funds or sponsorship it would make a huge difference. I have three of the McDermitt horses still with me and have overloaded my own ability to shelter them. I have a barn in the process for all of the rescues I have bailed out this year. Every horse I have is a rescue….not one of them was a horse I went out and chose…each and every single one of them and the mule are here because they were about to be on a truck and hauled to slaughter. One had cancer surgery, one is lame and may never be able to use his foot properly, two are pregnant....more mouths to feed. I have worked hard this year with hundreds of you to save as many horses as possible and I am as exhausted as all of you are from all of the drama, stress and financial commitments. I am hoping that even if some of you can donate $25 each to Zuma’s rescue this will help them continue to feed the five Fallon horses that you each wanted to see saved. I am spending more in feed for the 12 horses I have then I ever thought imaginable and it hard. I have donated as much money to Zuma’s now as I can and I have to continue to work on the barn and feed for those I have here. Jodi told me the grain alone for the 5 is over $120 a month…this doesn’t include the hay. They also don’t have enough space in the barn. If they could get some of their other horses in homes this would help them free up some space for these sweet dear hearts. You know it is really hard to step up and make a difference alone. It takes many of us working together to do it. I dont know how most of the horses in Washington that I have been involved with would have been saved this year without the huge great group we have (West Coast Equine Rescue Network). It has taken many people donating what they could to help get horses out of the kill pens and into homes. I appreciate all of the good work each and every one of you have done and I would love to be able to find a way to continue to help support Zuma after Jodi M stepped up for these horses and scooped them up from a second near death in Gunnison, Colorado when a rescue calling herself Helping Hands Rescue was trying to peel the babies off the still nursing mommies and sell them off one at a time. Little Sparrow was near death from a bad infection and broken nose at the time as you might remember. If any of you have any ideas I would love to see them posted. Jodi M is a fantastic person and I we can’t let her down now after all she has done for the horses. These horses are in need of homes and support until they find their own person. As, you all know bailing the horses out is not the end of it. They are not safe until they are adopted. These horses have had training now and are ready to continue their training at Zuma’s or with a loving person. Thank you all. Any donations now would make a huge difference for them. Don’t forget that Little Sparrow’s surgery cost $1200 and that had to come right out of the funds donated for the horses. I sold one painting for $300 to Chris Fairbanks but that hardly put a dent in the medical bills.
