I learn a little more about my own privilege every day. Todays lesson was twofold. This morning Audrey drove me to the Bart station, with a stop at Lucky to pick up a side dish for a work potluck. Not wanting to leave a backpack containing my companys laptop in plain view, I wore it into the store. Nobody stopped me. Nobody asked what was inside. Nobody tried to search it. Was that privilege? No, but I knew it was likely that nobody would hassle me. That is privilege Audrey pointed out that an employee had an eye on me during part of the trip. I never even saw him. Because my body contains a staggering breadth of prescription and OTC painkillers, my situational awareness was on vacation. I can put myself in a public environment while completely oblivious to my surroundings. That is also privilege.
