I left New York City for Georgia in 1984. After spending over - TopicsExpress

I left New York City for Georgia in 1984. After spending over twenty-five years in Georgia and over twenty in East Cobb I had lost given up my hope of eating the food, that was comfort food for me, living in Georgia. That would have to wait for my YEARLY, Christmas Season trips back to New York City. Then I discovered Matts Capozzis NY Deli. I remember my first time walking into the deli and peering into the cooler and seeing a roast beef that looked rare and juicy, just like at Zullos back in home in Staten Island. I, of course, ordered a roast beef sandwich with meunster cheese with horse radish and a little deli style mustard. It melted in my mouth. I knew then that I had found a home where I could enjoy my favorite comfort food. I was back in a neighborhood, Italian American culinary world. But like any top shelf NY Deli, the cultures of other ethnic groups were there in full bloom fully assimilated as if The Borg had paid a visit. (Star Trek). The German potato salad was prepared just like the Germans in the old upper East Side neighborhood of Yorkville in Manhattan used to prepare it. Pastrami, Rubens and fabulous Jewish rye as well as Kosher pickles were there and even knishes were readily available. The owner Matt Capozzi is a graduate of New York States prestigious Culinary Institute, the training ground of many of the finest Chefs in America. Like all master chefs Matt has mastered the art of making ordinary, everyday food, that we all take for granted, taste extraordinary. As an example you must try the Philly Cheese Steak with Matts signature jalapeño mayonase sauce. It is truly extraordinary. Matts recommendations should always be followed. Like a master chef he will advise you on what food is especially good on that particular day, or if the bread, baked fresh daily from a local bakery, is not up to Matts exacting standards. In closing Matts staff, particularly his long time Madam of the cash register Sam reflect the bosses high standards. Sam, brings a motherly Southern charm and since of humor which adds to the hominess of the environment. It is obvious that there would be a strong coterie of regulars who make this deli a neighborhood social center. Bob, our senior regular, sets the tone with good humor and intelligent wit. There are not many family run businesses left in America as we have been engulfed in the homogeneity of chain restaurant sameness. Do yourself a favor. Stop by Capozzis NY Deli. You will not regret it.
