I like books. I revere them. A good book is not only the content, that which takes you to new places, times, or ideas. It is also the beauty and fun of language. A perfect sentence, which I then repeat to whover is within hearing distance (usually a Border Terrier). A book is also a historical artifact in its own right. Made from once living tissue (thank you Mr. Tree) it can be glued together with cheap paper... and then you have to be in awe of how it holds together over time, how the colors stand up. Or a really good older book bound by stringand maybe magic. So Ive held off e-books. Even though I have always embrased technology... I dont know how to live without a couple of computers. Bluetooth is godlike. Nonetheless, Ive disdained e-books. I mean, Ive downloaded a couple to read on my Android Pad or phone, but not as a rule. You cant sit on an e-book, and heaven forbid you forgot that your Kindle was in your back pocket. You cant loan an e-book, or buy it half priced, or leave it as an inheritance. (Somebody will be glad to get my set of paperback discworld books someday). Ive left paperbacks behind in Hotels and airplanes, and have only been out a couple of dollars. Now Norma is different from me. Shes read maybe four novels in the past 45 years, and drags herself kicking and screaming into the techno or cyber world. She does move along, though. When we needed new cell phones because I switched providers, she wanted one that was just a phone. But that could do e-mail. And texting. And GPS. I bought a Kindle. Ive been re-reading the entire discworld series (or several discworld series). I decided to do that with the Game of Thrones, but I dont own those. I either listened to them (audible) or borrowed them from the library. So I bought a kindle to download the five book series. Kindle came yesterday. Maybe a half hour later, Norma had downloaded her first book and was off in the other room reading.
