I like to be informed about the techniques and history of the items I purchase on E-Bay. I purchased a complete set of Damascus Steel kitchen and steak knives. Therefore, I researched the techniques and looked up information until my heart was content. I found amazing information about the history of Damascus steel. The steel was bought from India and forged in Pakistan to be sold in the Middle East in the 1700s. The technique was secretive and was lost in the early 1800s. The original technique for crafting Damascus Steel was lost because of the rareness of the materials made for crafting and the loss of trade routes. Modern Damascus Steel manufacturing comes close to the original techniques but is not exact. Damascus Steel was legendary. It was the prized possession of Kings in the Middle Ages. Damascus Steel was strong enough to cut other swords in half, slice a falling hair, cut silk, and cut through rocks with ease! I found an amazing video that shows a modern process for hand forging a Damascus Steel knife. The video shows a man using a hammer and hand forging the blade as its folded and smelted into the fire. The blade the gentleman is making was folded eight times and has over seven hundred layers. Amazing! My Damascus Steel kitchen knives bought from E-Bay have been folded five times and have over 250 layers with high carbon steel. This video is similar to the hand forging techniques that my knives underwent. This video is amazing! Love, Smith Ernie https://youtube/watch?v=jexTj28SJ7s
