I liked this article on todays TT. This perfectly shows how Sharada Group and likes grew and spread their roots deep, sucking out peoples money under TMC regime. The State Govt. stood as silent spectator letting the big and powerful of the party make hay while the sun was shining. The graph showing the dip in small saving between year 2011 - 2013 itself tells the grim and dark story underneath. We have seen how the so called Special Investigation Team formed by the State Govt. functioned. I had a good reason to presume that the sole aim of SIT was to cover up the scam and protect the ones close to the party and power. Pay off few of the investors, buy some good name, pass it on to opponent parties and let the whole issue simmer down. This was the target but unfortunately shit had hit the fan and turned out to be much bigger than the TMC Govt. could think it could chew. Their own men and leaders went on uncontrolled rampage when they saw easy money floating around. I am sure TMC, not being a regimented party like CPM, could not fathom how deep their leaders were venturing into. But then the honorable CM keeps up the public face in her own inimitable manner and her claim of ‘blissful ignorance’ over the whole issue now sounds too far-fetched even to the ever ignorant ‘common man’. I think she has the political intelligence to understand that if the cat (a very ‘black’ one for that matter) is out of the bag, the damning effect it will have of her Ma Mati Manush party. The Ma and Manush which forms her base will not like if faced with the truth how her men flourished on the money cheated out of them. This has the ominous potential of changing the whole political equation in West Bengal in coming days which even her own chappal clad ‘surf excel’ clean image won’t be able to hold. I will be watching with keen interest. Will CBI be able to nab the rich and powerful behind his scam who unabashedly benefited from these institutions? Or will we see this to be part of yet another political game-plan at a much higher level where strings will be pulled again and wings of CBI will be clipped? In recent past we have seen increasing intervention by Judiciary on many important issues where the administration and the government as a whole failed to act and provide justice as it should be. It is just that the political influence and motives over administration, governance and the policing system has become so overpowering that it is clouding all good senses that is hallmark of a civil society. The trend has emerged and it’s pretty clear that general public is now looking up at the judiciary to be the ‘saviour’ or the ‘Messiah’ (if I have to use that word) as the governance structure which ensures justice prevails, and citizen’s rights are protected, has crashed and lost all public faith. Now this is not a good situation as overtly intervention of Judiciary means that the structures of democracy have seriously weakened. But then we are living in that reality. Now there is intervention of Supreme court here, will the judiciary hold its sway over the investigation process refuting political pressure? Time will only tell. While on this subject another interesting fact is that ‘MEDIA’ both print and electronic are now crying themselves hoarse against this injustice and govt. inaction. They are fulfilling their responsibility as watchdogs of the society and TRP and readership numbers are soaring at the same time. That is fine, I have nothing to say but this brings us to another interesting point. If one remembers the pages of all leading newspapers, they used to be FULL of full page advertisements of these “Group Of Companies” who were into all kinds businesses under the sun and promising the moon. If you remember the local TV channels, those were flushed with advertisements of these companies (they started to own a few as well). Where was ‘investigative journalism’ in those days? Couldnt they go deep and found out how and why such a flurry of companies flooding their pages and screens? Why jump into the fray now when all is over? Nobody wanted to kill a cash cow, right? All are slaves of money and true how do you run a paper / channel without advertiser’s money? So much so for the watchdogs, they only bark when the thief could no longer feed them and flees.
