I listened to a lot o blues when I was young: Lightnin Hopkins, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Junior Wells. Until I heard the Paul Butterfield Blues Band it never occurred to me that I could learn to play it. But the first record was more than a reproduction. It was a bunch of white kids finding their way into this music we all loved and making their own version of it. The Stones had been there first but didnt sound as rooted in the real deal, and besides they were British. Also, for better or worse, Mike Bloomfield, along with Danny Kalb helped usher in the era of the guitar hero. Butterfield, like Mayall, kept discovering great guitarists: Buzzy Feiten, Amos Garrett, and showed how the blues could grow and change. Hell, between supplying the band for Dylan to go electric and putting togehter Better Days, he practically invented Americana. Long overdue. https://youtube/watch?v=trUpQEwmboE
