I live in Georgia, and we do not have a union. I taught for 34 years, and one of the biggest concerns parents should have is the federally mandated curriculum the government has put in place. It is more commonly known as common core. If parents were more involved, they would truly be protesting. At this point in time you have the changing of the guard--older teachers like me have retired. We knew better than some of this nonsense coming down from the government. That is no longer the case. Young teachers are already indoctrinated in this mindset, or the school administration holds them accountable for teaching the common core. The problem has dimensions you never imagined==including testing companies making billions while public education is cut to the bone. If you think Obama is pro education, please look at the cuts to public education. In GA, even our state gov. is anti education. Our former governor, Sonny Perdue, furloughed teachers and cut public education while increasing his own salary and that of the legislature while so passing laws to benefit himself--google Oaky Woods and Sonny Perdue. As the ultimate slap in the face-he built a fish pond in his home town of Perry and named it GO FISH... There is no way public education has a chance with politicians, civil rights leaders who want everything dumbed down, and an increasingly violent society. Even the president has told teachers not to discipline disruptive black males. A federal curriculum, no discipline, under funding, unqualified teachers who are more worried about representing than learning-- and politicians who chop education of any kind at every opportunity....yet there are still a few good teachers in all of this, but the number is decreasing every day.
