I live in the desert of Southern Utah. I have a severely neglected garden plot that I would like to revive and condition the soil. The soil is mostly sand and clay. I also have a fairly large pile of organic matter (hay, straw, manure, leaves, kitchen waste, etc) some of the compost is relatively mature some is quite new. My questions for the group are 1) Should I add organic matter to the soil right now or should I wait until spring and add compost and mulch. 2) If now, what is the best method to go about adding the material? Should till or fork the soil lightly then add a heavy layer of mulch on top and let it set to spring, or work the mulch into the soil by tilling or lay down a layer of compost on the soil, cover with cardboard, then add mulch on top. I am not sure right now the layout of the garden but I do know that the soil needs improvement and feel that it is something I can do immediately.
