I lived through the blood frenzy of 1979; the madness of 1981; the harrowing droughts and famine of the 1980s and attempted coups, curfews and lawlessness of the same period; I experienced the tensions of 1992 when doubters predicted on rooftops the slide into anarchy; against all odds in 2000 our Republic had a peaceful transition from a former fighter pilot to an Oxon lawyer....in all these I have borne the pain of citizenship without fleeing...this is our Republic and come Thursday some of us will continue to walk hand in hand with the nation that bears the bones of our ancestors and the umbilical chords of our children and us ......
