I lost my beloved friend today. He is the large black dog on my profile pic. Mickey had gotten really sick, with diarrhea every day for months, to diabetes, to not eating anything, not even freshly cooked chicken breast or bacon. He slept 90% of his day. I knew it was his time to go, so I called the vet and scheduled the appointment. We took him to the vet that he always saw, and he was given the sedation shot, the one that is supposed to make him almost comatose, and we stayed with him, waiting for it to work. Suddenly, his head started to thrash violently from side to side, and this continued for several minutes, until I had the tech administer another shot. When the doctor came back in, Mickey was still going, and he gave a third shot. I was beside myself and had to walk outside, crying furiously. When I went back in, Joe had him all calmed down, and he was just laying there. We left and the doctor administered the final dose. I have never had a pet have the reaction that Mickey did, the head thrashing, and I worry that the vet did not give enough in the first shot, and that it is all his fault that my friend had to suffer so. Has anyone else had this reaction with an animal, or heard of it happening? I used a different vet, at the same office, when i put Lucy to sleep, and she just went quietly to sleep in my arms. What went wrong? I am so upset that I cannot stop crying, and have been popping valium today, not good. I just cannot get that picture out of my head, of the head thrashing he had to go through. Is this normal behavior? This is only the second animal that I have watched being euthanized. Joe usually takes them by himself, because I cannot handle it. Please pray for me; I am really not doing well.
