I love a marketing group Im in, so continue to promote their webinar. Heres why: It seems most of my friends are entrepreneurs in some way: artists, musicians, authors, coaches, photographers working in their converted garages, or moms writing blogs for a bit of profit from their kitchen tables.. Ive been an independent contractor for almost the entire life of my eldest son. Hes 31 now. The life of an entrepreneur is a mixed bag. Yes, freedom to run my business the way Id like, but zero security. There has been no such thing as a 40-hour week for me. Independent Contractors have to wear all of the hats until they can pay someone to help them. It is a rewarding, yet worrisome life, wondering whether the bills are going to get paid. I started out as a hairdresser, paying booth space to run my own business. I owned one and then two small hair salons. I was a single mom for a while doing everything I could to make ends meet. There was a time when my car broke down and I flat out didnt have the money to keep fixing it, so my kids and I walked everywhere we went, which gets old when it is out of necessity. I worked hard to keep myself from feeling like it was a hopeless situation and I sure didnt want to freak out my small kids, who, I realize when looking back, were quite brilliant and tuned in to their surroundings and my emotions. My father started to worry, so gave me $900 to buy The Green Hornet - a vintage station wagon that the kids and I considered to be as good as a Mercedes because it actually ran. I was grateful it started in the mornings and got us where we needed to go. I stayed focused with my work and family scene and eventually built the first and largest day spa in Ashland, Oregon with my 2nd husband. I had a baby the same year we opened. The business was busy from the get-go because I leveraged my business and customer relationships from my former salons. But in short order we also had 30 employees and a $70,000 monthly overhead to go with our beautiful environment. Talk about wonderful and scary and tiring and invigorating all at the same time! Im thankful for the daily aromatherapy. Luckily, I had an amazing and more than talented staff who were willing to follow my lead and work as a team, keeping clients coming back over the years because of the great care they received. Our community rewarded us by voting us Service Business of the Year. It was a big deal and huge honor. We, indeed, had become experts at the Client Experience, yet we couldnt have done it without new customers being sent our way by other businesses and the clients themselves, referring their friends and family. Eventually my husband and I would sell the business and after a break, I began writing 4 Seasons in 4 Weeks. Being an author is the same thing as being an independent contractor/entrepreneur. Because I was starting a brand new business (selling books, workshops, and speaking gigs), I was determined to leverage my resources quickly or risk the chance of not making it, no matter how good the book message. This was a new industry for me, so I didnt have a customers or business associates to leverage from. Joint Venturing is the model these days for reciprocal promoting when you and others have compatible products or services, and the only way to really do it successfully online, especially when youre starting with zero followers. But how do you find other entrepreneurs who understand how it works or want to promote for you? Which leads me to the EVENT coming up on Thursday.
