I love it when science reinforces scripture: Our brains are naturally wired [sinful nature effect] to focus on the negative, but there are steps we can take to rewire them for happiness! Repeated patterns of neural activity can change the structure of your brain, and because negative experiences -- like burning your hand on a stove -- can be dangerous, they’re more easily reinforced in your brain than positive experiences. The good news is that there are ways to overcome your brain’s natural “negativity bias.” Lingering for an extra 20-30 seconds on an everyday positive experience, like a conversation with a friend, can keep that memory in your brain’s short-term buffer long enough to be transferred into long-term storage. The more positive experiences you store, the more you can change the structure of your brain and tip the balance of your brain’s negativity bias. Phil. 4:8-9 Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.
