I love running in to former students! This one is special because he is the one that completely changed my perspective of illegal immigrants. Lets just say this young man found himself in the country through unique circumstances as a young teenager. He struggled with the language and cultural differences, but he worked very hard! I watched him navigate the difficult, expensive, bureaucratic process of obtaining citizenship so he could work! I watched him conquer the very difficult TAKS EXIT tests (all 4 of them) even though he had only been in the country for a few short years! He absolutely beamed today when he shared with me that in a few weeks, he will have completed coursework in a trade school program that has already landed him a lucrative career! This young man had the support and love of his family, his classmates, and his teachers! Support and hard work on his part have truly paid off! I am so ridiculously proud of this young man I can hardly explain it! I used to tout a diatribe that if someone wanted to be here, they should come here legally. While I still feel that there are better ways to go about getting into this country than risking ones life, until I met this boy and became immersed in his story, I never knew just how difficult a process it was to gain citizenship nor did I fully understand what those sacrifices meant. Not until today. Way to go! I cant wait to be at your graduation, sweet boy. Ill be the one crying my eyes out!
