I love the road. The open road. The distant road. The gravel - TopicsExpress

I love the road. The open road. The distant road. The gravel road. The road to the future. The road to the windmill. Give me the keys, put me behind the wheel, get out of my way. When I found myself on my own, I had to develop new habits. I almost never drove anywhere. Lee did. (I think its a guy thing.) I would read, sleep, count white horses, and look for weird stuff. (Im easily entertained.) Now I drive, listen to audio books, listen to country music, look for weird stuff, and try to stay awake. And I found that actually, I do love to get in the car and go places. Im a little over an hour from North Platte, and two hours from Grand Island and Kearney. That gives me enough of big city shopping whenever I want. (When you live in the Sandhills, two hours to get somewhere is not unreasonable.) And when I want a really big city, I head for Omaha, which is coincidentally RIGHT on the way to my grandchildren. Ive driven to Minneapolis a couple of times, and Topeka, Kansas. And, of course, the car knows the way to Council Bluffs by itself, since thats where my grandbabies are. A few years I took my checkbook and my courage in hand and went to buy a new car. My pickup was a manual transmission and I had bad knees. The car was nice, but it had a few too many ghosts...it was distinctly Lees car. I have three grandchildren, two of them still in booster seats. I needed a minivan. I went to see Dustin Abrahams at Woodhouse, and he took me by the trembling hand and walked me through my first car purchase. Bless him. I love my car. Its a silvery blue Freestar van with keycode locks so I cant lock my keys inside anymore. Its got plenty of room for booster seats, furniture, cat carriers, groceries, bicycles, patio furniture, and Christmas presents. It drives easily, has great brakes (proved by the near-misses Ive had with deer), the air bags work (proved by the deer I didnt miss), and has good gas mileage (proved by the fact that Im still financially solvent). I am seriously grateful for my Blue Baby, and the many miles we have seen together. I am grateful for the ability to travel, and the open road that draws me onward.
