I love the theory of capitalism. Its a beautiful harmony between social and personal needs. Im also very wary of social planning and the historical horrors perpetrated by people who thought they could do it (communist China, Nazi Germany, etc). That being said, this is one of the most succinct and concise articles Ive read about the web of problems facing the world today and how capitalism (in practice) is at the heart of it. I dont disagree with the authors arguments or evidence, but with the conclusion: a capitalist revolution, should it come about, would not be as benign as an intellectual revolution. It would be a knock-down, people-dying-in-the-streets type of revolution. Those in power have never given it up willingly, and that is why I dont think it will ever happen. As a society, I believe we will exploit our environment until “the wheels fall off. Until we literally jeopardize the existence of our species and every other. I also believe that history has proven our species inadequacy at central planning. Am I the only one who has reached this conclusion? At times I feel I am the only one I know whos personal actions reflect the acceptance of this hopelessness. My efforts toward living self-sufficiently aboard a boat (documented in my blog, San Juan Sufficiency) is very much a passionate embrace of life and adventure, but it is also a sober exercise in keeping society at arms length and bracing for the inevitable fall out. Have you accepted the conclusion that society (as it operates today) is hopeless? If not, why not? What supports your belief that society can continue as it has? If you have accepted the hopelessness, what are you doing about it?
