I love these posts by Carol Kaye--if you dont follow her on facebook you should. Her observations on recording in LA over the fifties, sixties, seventies etc are priceless. What an incredible career she has had! SB Here she writes: This is a big hit, original recording of Ashford & Simpson hit I did with Ray Charles. We did this at Rays studio about 1966, ......Earl Palmer on Drums, Rene Hall guitar and arranger: youtube/watch?v=OXjMl5tS-ao Notice how Earl accented the 2 backbeat (Jazz style) and left out the 4 backbeat.....I changed the written ensemble bass line w/horns to paradiddles to add more energy....and this is what happened. Its the original 1st hit of this and was played quite a bit on the Jazz station too. Ray was terrific, we all had fun with this one..... My buddy Earl Palmer, is/was the most-recorded Studio Drummer No. 1 yes (1947 thru 2005)..but due to prejudice of one film he is seen on, another drummer is given that honor unfortunately.....Earl was the nicest warmest man, as well as fantastic drummer Ive known since our days together playing on Sam Cooke and Ritchie Valens hits together 1957....a great Daddy, and super inventive drummer who brought the New Orleans feel to LA, love and miss you Earl!
