I love this cartoon about Hachette and Amazon even though it is wrong. Amazon does more for authors than the entire traditional publishing industry put together: - Removes gatekeepers. Anyone can publish a book with Amazon. This doesnt mean every book is good, but at least authors have a shot. This sure beats sucking up to editors who are looking for 50 Shades of Gray meets Good to Great. - Pays much, much better. The economics are fantastic for authors working with Amazon. On at $9.99 Kindle ebook, I make $7.00. On a suggested retail $25 printed book, I make about the same amount. This is 4-5 times what a traditional publisher pays per copy. And you get paid monthly, not every six months. - Provides much better information. The level of information an Amazon author gets is orders of magnitude better than the royalty statement you get from a traditional publisher. The only authors who are getting screwed in the Amazon vs Hachette debacle are the Hachette authors, but they got huge advances so dont lay awake at night worrying about them. This is like oil companies complaining theyre not getting enough government subsidies. If youre an aspiring (ie, unpublished) author, Amazon is the best thing that ever happened to you. buff.ly/XGR71G
