I love this hymn. Before I heard the words for the first time, I was sitting in church before the service started, listening to the prelude, and my thoughts were flying free... As I listened I envisioned the whole universe filled with an infinite number of strings, and then saw an invisible hand move over them, filling the whole universe with a single note, composed of this harmony of an infinite number of singing strings! Wow.... And then the reader stood up and read the words of this hymn by Mary Baker Eddy Oer waiting harpstrings of the mind There sweeps a strain, Low, sad, and sweet, whose measures bind The power of pain, And wake a white-winged angel throng Of thoughts, illumed By faith, and breathed in raptured song, With love perfumed. Then His unveiled, sweet mercies show Lifes burdens light. I kiss the cross, and wake to know A world more bright. And oer earths troubled, angry sea I see Christ walk, And come to me, and tenderly, Divinely talk. Thus Truth engrounds me on the rock, Upon Lifes shore, Gainst which the winds and waves can shock, Oh, nevermore! From tired joy and grief afar, And nearer Thee,-- Father, where Thine own children are, I love to be. My prayer, some daily good to do To Thine, for Thee; An offering, pure of Love, whereto God leadeth me. ~ Christ my refuge, CS hymnal 253-57 I find that no matter where I am in this journey, I can find this refuge at the perfect place somewhere within this hymn... So grateful for the journey each pioneer has taken and is taking, and for the love that writes and sings these footnotes to be discovered in the heart of humanity.
