I love to really listen, analyze, and reflect on the work people do. I especially enjoy it when it is data intensive and seeks to encourage good things. Yesterday I was my wife Kathryn San Nicolas guest at the Guam Department of Education Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) public showing at the Hagatna Shopping Center. PBIS is a Federally Funded program implemented in our Elementary, Middle, and recently one High School (Southern High) that creates student incentives to reinforce positive behavior, tracks negative behavior occurences, and strategizes at the school and district level on how to improve. The data was very telling...students and school employees are pretty good to go at the beginning of the week and the early part of the day, having come off the weekend and feeling fresh with a new week and a new morning. By mid-day and mid-week hunger and hump day kick in, and behavioral issues stir up with students acting out and school employees referring more readily. By the end of the day and week negative outcomes peak, with fuses short student self control and school employee tolerance coalesce into a referral data spike. I really enjoyed briefly analyzing all this with VSA Benavente Middle School Principal Dexter Fullo, who is as much a data junkie as I am =). PBIS now sees all this, and our education professionals at the school level and in the overall district are employing micro and macro intervention strategies to contain and reverse negative data sets. This will lead to an improved learning environment for students, and an improved work environment for school employees, increasing student and employee morale and hopefully academic outcomes across the board. Love it. Thank you to all the hardworking DOE folks who are working to make this happen. On my end I learned from Alfred Garrido that our school attendence (truancy) officers who enforce our student attendence laws were NOT included in law enforcement pay adjustment scales. I also got the affirmation from Student Support Deputy Superintendent Chris Anderson that High Schools could use a Registrar (or equivalent) to reduce school guidance counselor time on student schedules, and free up more of their time for social and academic counseling. These will be added to my office docket to be addressed as soon as we complete our due diligence John Paul Manuel Julian Janssen Jermaine Alerta Rikki Orsini TNelta Mori. Thanks again to everyone for their hard work, and to my wife for getting my data nerd fix satiated over the weekend. Michael F.Q. San Nicolas
