I made a difficult but right decision today to make a work change. I am going to stay employed as a nurse educator at the same university, but I am going to go from a continuing, tenure-track appointment to a term appointment. What this means is that I will have a year-by-year contract. The good news is that I wont have the expectations (aka pressures) of continuing to conduct research and write grants, nor have to practice in the clinical setting. It is time for me to have a more balanced life where I can focus on my priorities....family, friends, as well as other things that are important to me. Of course, with this decision comes a reduction in pay. But, this decision also releases me from other responsibilities at the university, like chairing committees. So, after weighing the pros and cons, I feel good about my decision. It is the next logical step as I look forward to retirement.
