I made an earlier tweet about what is going on in Ferguson, Missouri. You may not have seen it. Anyway, here are my feelings: I had so many thoughts on whats going on right now in Missouri that I couldnt include them all in a tweet. Im sad that pretty much every (all?) society on the planet subjugates/bullies a minority population. Im upset that this happens in America or anywhere else. I get sick of institutionalized racism. Police violence is an issue. As a historian, I think of: lynchings, the Ku Klux Klan, exclusionary laws, redlining, the entirety of the civil rights era, anti-Chinese laws, camps for the Japanese during WWII, labor busting, the ERA, Hurricane Katrina, Good job, Brownie, Trayvon Martin, drone strikes, HUAC, wage disparity, COINTELPRO, and so many other things that are directly related and/or endemic of greater problems. Im one of those optimists that thinks that the future will bring social progress, and although I know that it always is two steps forward/one step back, this stuff kills me. You can tell me to love it or leave it, but Id rather stay here and try to make it something that Ill love a little more. But: Im really disappointed and saddened tonight.
