I made the first piece from the $500 wood stash I bought last - TopicsExpress

I made the first piece from the $500 wood stash I bought last week. I made a pendant out of the Honduran Mahogany. This is the fiddleback or curly mahogany with the wavy grain. Honduran and Cuban Mahogany are the Genuine mahogany species. The others are wannabes. One of the characteristics of mahogany is extreme chatoyance. The wood flips color as you change its orientation to the light... light becomes dark and dark becomes light. Well I turned this one and sanded it to 400 grit and buffed it to 600 and then put on some Tung Oil. Bang Zoom WOW! Did the oil POP that little pendant. It is the most chatoyant curly pendant I have ever made. and the wavy grain is like a bonus. I need to give it a couple of days to dry before I put a final finish on it. So hang in there. This one is a beauty.
