I mean, I love the way he does Malta proud not only with his voice and his own love for our island. I think his voice and charisma are impressive, and I’m amazed by his ability to feel at ease all over the world and joke about everything, as also by his accessibility and sincerity. But do I have to have Joseph Calleja for breakfast, lunch and tea? Yesterday it was the Air Malta ad on the paper which I thoroughly enjoyed, and which led to my listening to the encores at the Nobel Prize 2012 ceremony on You Tube. Today it’s the BBC news announcing he’ll be singing a tribute to Pavarotti at the Classic FM concert soon. Personally, apart from his rendering of ‘Nessun Dorma’, I’ve never been keen on Pavarotti’s interpretations, preferring to listen to the more sensitive renderings of the other 2 tenors, yes, even Carreras despite his much smaller voice, because he really sings from the soul, as his autobiography contends. And I find even Joseph Calleja’s interpretations more sensitive than the massive Luciano’s. Not so long ago, after the First Holy Communion ceremony where my grandson, Luc, ‘received’ along with Joseph’s son, Xandru, I pulled off a Maria which I am sure left Joseph and his companion wondering whether this old woman was all there (I’ve never been, of course). I asked him if HE recognised ME (hehe) and her why she hadn’t sung – thank God Cikka was somewhere else, since my children, including MY Xandru (who came first), have never appreciated my panache for spouting the embarrassing unexpected. Apparently neither did Joseph, who walked off incredulous and possibly in alarm at having been accosted in this fashion :) Another reason to smile when he, as opposed to me, opens his mouth to deliver ...
