I met Carolyn in early June 1966. Classes were finished for the year and I was home from Mizzou working at the little grocery store in Platte Woods. Got off work from work one evening and as I walked in the front door of Mom and Dad’s house, there in the kitchen stood a runway model – tall, slim, elegant, in a matching shorts and top outfit [I can’t explain why I remember that], an infectious laugh, a captivating smile to melt the coldest heart, long auburn hair on six ounce orange juice cans for rollers – a vision – and she was lookin’ at me. Me – tall, gangly, awkward, red hair in a California flattop, black horn rim glasses, self-conscious, tongue-tied, trying so hard to be cool [see California flattop] – failing miserably and weak in the knees. To Carolyn’s credit, and my undeserved happiness, she was able to overlook most of that and if my luck holds just a little longer we’ll celebrate our forty-fifth anniversary in a few days. I’ve long maintained that the Lord watches out for dumb animals and I’m his prime example. He was looking out for me that day – all I had to do was follow along. And, yes, her laugh is still contagious, her smile captivating and I’m still weak in the knees.
