I met Graham Joyce in a convention bar back in 1991. Hed just published his first book, Dreamside, and Id just sold my first to a publisher. I thought his joy and exuberance was due to becoming a novelist, which hed set his heart on, but actually as I learned down the years, Graham simply possessed a magnificent zest for life. Any gathering was enlivened by him being there. His writing was remarkable, with invigorating prose and a comprehension of human foibles that few could match. His books slipped down like the finest wine. It was a bitter blow last year when he was diagnosed with cancer, but I was never surprised by the fortitude he showed during that time. I saw him a few months ago, when the cancer was in remission, and his outlook on life remained steadfast. He passed away today. I am proud to have known him, and prouder that he was a friend. My world is a darker place today -and I know exactly what hed say about that. Cheers, Graham.
