I met Jesus in a log cabin. Our Pathfinders Sunday School Class - TopicsExpress

I met Jesus in a log cabin. Our Pathfinders Sunday School Class members take turns hosting a social event each month. Last weekend Jerri and I hosted a western night in her beautiful log home -- complete with antiques from the old west. Pathfinders arrived in jeans, denim shirts and cowboy boots. They fashioned accessories from bandanas and wrote their names across sheriff’s badges. We feasted on barbeque brisket and pulled pork. The table groaned with all the delightful dishes that come to a potluck. After breaking bread together we lit the “campfire” and were entertained with western songs by Sue Talbot, Dean Bradley and Alan LIndal. And then the fun began. The sing-a-long! “Do Lord”, “Home on the Range”, “Amazing Grace”, and “I’ll Fly Away.” I looked around the room. There were 35+ of my dear friends. The Pathfinders’ Class is extremely important to my healing from some pretty rough bumps along life’s way. My friends from Ohio, the Blooms, were there. Dave and I met 45 years ago in the recreational ministries of McCurdy Schools. Alan -- one of our pastor pals who gave such good pastoral care to Burr. Sue -- a sister in Christ who came to serve in the Concordia District in the 90’s. Dean -- a buddy who has been part of worship experiences with the Crickards for over a decade as we helped lead people nearer to God on the mountaintops of Colorado, the streets of West Hollywood and on September 11, 2001. For a moment it was a glimpse into heaven. The power of God’s love was absolutely overwhelming. But the presence of God seemed to glow most intently from a special individual our the midst. As we sang through the verses of “I’ll Fly Away” Pat Houston’s face truly glowed. She and her husband, Fred, have been faithful witnesses to Jesus’ love throughout their lives. Fred is now in heaven. Pat continues the journey of discipleship but for that brief moment I was confident she was in the presence of Fred, other loved ones and friends, and her Jesus. “Some bright morning when this life is over Ill fly away To that home on God’s celestial shore Ill fly away Ill fly away, oh glory. Ill fly away in the morning When I die hallelujah by and by Ill fly away/ There’s something about a log cabin, the breaking of bread, old friends and gospel hymns . . . You just never know who you might meet. Maybe even Jesus . . .Oh Glory!
