I met a fascinating artist this past weekend. He lives on Central in Alameda and he uses his front yard to display his art. His pieces are not created to be pretty, but they are meant to provoke thought...they are statements that question the hypocrisy of government and religion. We had a long conversation about his work and the hot water hes landed in over the years. While we may supposedly have the right to free speech in this country, if our government does not like what we have to say, it can and will suppress that right in ways that can only be described as draconian. You could find yourself expending hundreds of thousands of dollars defending yourself, unable to travel, under surveillance, and posing a threat to anyone who associates with you. It was a mindblowing experience to hear it directly from another human being who has endured this kind of treatment. I wont mention him by name since I dont think hed want that...but if you are local, you should take a look at his work. Its by the Chinese Seventh Day Adventist church on Central at 9th. The display is changed every thirty days.
