I met a man, today. This man, was from Eritrea formally part - TopicsExpress

I met a man, today. This man, was from Eritrea formally part of Ethiopia. He fought for his country in the military, then was made to serve his country as a policeman and he spent a further 8 years doing just that. However, instead of becoming the free democratic government Eritrea had promised its people, the country became the opposite, a totalitarian dictatorship. His family and friends were murdered or imprisoned without trial for speaking out and opposing the governments actions and policies. Finally he had no choice but to flee his country and come to the UK. At least 2 million people have fled from Eritrea and have found asylum in various countries around the world, not just here in our country. So, the man, hes been here for 8 years. He spent the first 6 & 1/2 years wearing the official tag of asylum seeker without a permit to work, now however he works 7 days a week hoping that one day he can return home. This man, this soldier, this police officer is now a cab driver. A cab driver; and he is so grateful for just that. Thank god our governments immigration policy is open to these desperate people. Yes there are loopholes that people exploit but thats life. Please dont allow the medias constant scaremongering tactics insult your intelligence and push you towards voting for a far right policy on immigration. Please just take a minute to pause before you vote and consider this man, the face of what is great about our immigration policy and think about what youd like to happen if you found yourself in his position. If you got to this point, thanks for reading my post. Just wanted to pass on the insight I was given today. Feel free to share. X
