I miss Mexico. Although I was only there for a month, and its not the first time Ive gone or experienced missing it or the culture shock of coming back, coming back this time is the hardest its ever been. The community, the culture, the kids who never cease to make me smile, and the amazing friends who have become basically family combine to make it a place that now feels like home. This trip also had some heartbreaking parts which made it even harder to leave. That one month contained both some of the best and some of the saddest moments of my life and its impossible to put the impact its had on me into words. I dont think Ive ever appreciated how broken this world is, but on the flip side, I dont think Ive appreciated how powerful God is either. As someone who grew up going to church, I have heard a lot about love and joy and generosity and community and justice and forgiveness and peace and self-sacrifice and giving to the poor. And I think a lot of us think were doing alright on most of those things. But to live a life thats based on the fact that Jesus sacrificed everything to save us from the separation from God and the punishment we deserve is to live a life thats radically different than the life our culture and world call us to have. And if our lives are truly marked by those things, (as well as others that I didnt mention) those are lives that are so, so different from normal lives. Ive been living a pretty normal life. But Ive seen a little bit of the beauty than can come out of people who are living lives that are truly based on love for God and neighbors, as well as a little bit of the corruption and brokenness that can come out of people who are simply going along with what a culture says is right. Christianity the way the Bible teaches it has the potential to absolutely change the world, but it isnt supposed to be easy. Christ literally walked in our shoes and entered into our affliction. Those who will not help others until they are destitute reveal that Christs love has not yet turned them into the sympathetic persons the gospel should make them. -Tim Keller
