I must be watching a different F1 to most other people. I quite like GP 2014 up till now. Its not perfect, but honestly, has any sport ever been? People say that racing was so much better in the 50s/60s/70s/80s, but was it REALLY? Dont get me wrong, F1 from the mid 60s onwards was what I was bought up on and I loved it, but how many of us actually saw those races live in their entirety? Before 1978 those of us in the UK only saw the occasional GP on TV. Between 1978 and the early 90s we only saw edited highlights for about 1/2 an hour. I used to go to the British GP every year, but cant remember a race when there was as much overtaking as there was in the first dozen laps in Sepang this morning (with the possible exception of 1975 when it rained and most cars fell off). Im sitting here watching the BTCC races from Brands and there has been very little overtaking - even in cars that can travel side by side without getting airborne. It used to be that F1 was a proving ground for road cars, but lets face it, that hasnt been the case for very many years. It is now again though. The new features being used in F1 in 2014 (in the fields of energy recovery and fuel efficiency) will be in our road cars in the years to come. In other words, F1 has become relevant again ..... and it had to do that in the modern age. The way it was going, it was heading towards becoming a dinosaur. And we all know what became of the dinosaurs. And then theres the sound! OK, theyre not the noisey, fire spitting dragons weve seen before (or should that be dinosaurs?) and we all miss the sound of a Ferrari or Matra V12. But in all honestly, does the volume of the cars REALLY make that much difference if youre watching on TV? Did the commentators have to shout to make themselves heard above the V8s? Of course they didnt, because the sound is always balanced on TV anyway. OK the sound is different and some may like it, some not, but the volume really only applies to those actually at the circuit and Im sure thats something that can be fixed. My personal opinion is that F1 was going down a blind alley and it needed a good shake up. We have to be realistic, F1 was NEVER about constant overtaking and weve probably seen as much in the first 2 GP of 2014 than was seen in the whole season years ago. F1 has always been about the whole scene and you cant just dip in and out of it and still understand exactly whats going on. It needs a little effort, but at least weve been able to see it all on TV. And all the drivers are still alive. That wasnt always the case.
