I narrowly averted one of my pet peeves in Austin last night: an amateur musician sitting in on a professional show (I missed it because I left early to go dancing to another one of my favorite bands, and the necessity of making such choices is also annoying, but unavoidable in a town with so many options). I saw this was going to happen before I left: this guy sits up front, with his instrument, and bugs the musicians to let him sit in and play. I’ve seen him do this with this same band before, and heard the consequences. He sucks, but is apparently oblivious to that fact. (Yes, he is better than me, but that is called damning with faint praise). I know that the line between professional and amateur musician is fuzzy, because some musicians that I consider professional actually support themselves with other jobs (e.g. Jesse Harris ), and some are still students (e.g. Cat Clemons III ). But, for my purposes, a professional musician is someone that I will pay to see (through tips or a cover charge). And, if pay to hear the pros, I don’t appreciate amateurs mucking it up. . . .
