I need to explain how or why I became such a rabid Pittsburgh Pirates fan. It actually began on Oct 13, 1960. No, I’m not one of the many people to claim to have been in Forbes Field at 3:14pm that day…I was just over 3 years old, and my mom was pushing a stroller on the sidewalks of Somerville, NJ with my younger brother Ken. I was walking along its side. A bunch of construction workers were working on scaffolding when Maz hit the homerun…they began shouting and caring on, since we were in Yankee territory, they probably weren’t celebrating. When mom asked them what happen and they told her, mom told them that she was happy…I supposedly had a smile on my face. That is when I became a Pirates fan for life! Years later, I met many of those who played on that championships team, Vernon Law, Dick Groat, Bill Virdon, Bob Friend…and I actually interviewed and wrote Maz’s SABR bio which is in the book “Sweet 60.”
