I need to get this off my chest. Moms out there: I would love your opinion. So I had a parent/teacher conference with Haleighs teacher and counselor. During our discussion, the counselor informs me that she meets with young girls and stresses the importance of nice, pretty, perfectly combed hair, the use of bracelets, earrings, etc. She then went on to say that if these young girls start worrying more about their way they look, it will give bullies less reason to pick on them. I calmly stated that in our household you are beautiful with long, short, straight, or purple hair (though I exaggerated on the purple maybe-but I was trying to make a point). Heres my opinion: if a school is going to invest so much time and energy into molding young girls into what they think society considers acceptable and making them think they need to fit in, shouldnt they invest time and energy counseling the bullies instead of innocent girls? My child is only ten years old. She should start wearing bracelets, earrings, and necklaces when SHE is ready, and not just because someone tells her to. What do you think? #beyourself
