I need to have a Soapbox Moment...As a parent to 6 children, 4 teenagers and someone who spends her day trying to listen to the guidence of the Holy Spirit in childrens ministry, Im feeling very frustrated by the mentallity that seems to be running rampent through our community. The notion that teenagers are going to drink no matter what we as parents do, so we might as well get on board and not only allow it, but be cool with it, and in some cases PROVIDE it for them! Im sorry...WHAT? NO! Where are our heads folks? There is a drinking age for a reason. Teenagers bodies are not ready for alchohol and as a general rule, theyre not emotionally equipped for the responsibility that goes along with alchohol consumption. Further, when you have kids who abstain, they feel compelled fall into the role of caring for those who are in trouble, thus potentially putting themselves in harms way. NOT OK! What happened to boundaries? We owe it to our kids to do better than this. You know what makes for a cool parent? Being cool enough to love your kids so much you protect them from harm and teach them right from wrong. Its our responsibility and our charge to keep ALL our children safe!
