I never realized that it was the great New Orleans drummer Vernel Fournier on drums on this track! I always knew him most from his records with Ahmad Jamal. Good reminder that lots of the so-called jazz legends were way more multi-faceted, open, and versatile than historical record sometimes wants to reflect. Phineas Newborn was a great blues piano player on many early B.B. King records. John Coltrane was reportedly a great R&B tenor player when he lived in Philly, etc. These artists were not playing at this music-- they were playing it!
